Memory is leakier than love. A year from now you'll reach for the exact way they told that story - the pause, the grin - and find it blurred at the edges. This is the ritual for that: one story about them, written down, once a month.
How it works
- Once a month - pick a day you'll remember, the 1st or their birthday-number
- One story. Small beats big: the way they ordered coffee outranks the eulogy version of them
- Write it as it comes. Grammar and order don't matter; the detail does
- Date it, keep it somewhere it can pile up - this journal works
In a year you'll have twelve stories you might otherwise have lost. In five years, sixty. This is how a person stays three-dimensional: not the obituary facts, but the Tuesday-ness of them - what they hummed, what they couldn't parallel park, what they always said when it rained.
And if a month slips past you, nothing is broken. The stories wait. They've got time.
