Waking up is the daily re-remembering. There's a half-second before it lands, and then it lands. The first hour decides less than it feels like it does - but a small, repeatable shape gives the landing somewhere soft.
A first hour, one possible shape
- Kettle on before anything else. The ritual matters more than the tea
- One window, opened, thirty seconds of outside air on your face
- One true sentence, said or written: "Today feels heavy." "I slept." "I miss him." The journal here takes one-line entries; one line is a full entry
- One small next thing - shower, dog, toast. Just the next thing, never the whole day
The point of a morning shape isn't discipline and it isn't healing. It's that decisions are expensive when you're grieving, and a shape spends fewer of them. You can be on autopilot and still be doing it right.
Some mornings the shape will hold you. Some mornings you'll skip all of it and stay under the covers an extra hour. That's not the ritual failing. Rest is also a first hour.
